When sharing my recent transition back from Australia, the question I often encounter is, “Do you miss it?” This query typically follows a bemused remark about my decision to leave such a beautiful country.
It has been six months since my family and I returned to the UK, and initially, I didn’t find myself missing Australia much. My focus was primarily on settling in and adjusting to life as a new parent.
However, with an upcoming trip to Melbourne for Easter, memories of my time in Australia have been ignited, and I’ve found myself reminiscing about the aspects I cherished the most. Here are some highlights that I will always hold dear.
Highlights of Living in Australia
A Healthier Lifestyle
The stunning views of Sydney motivated me to embrace a more active lifestyle. I found myself hiking, enjoying fresh produce, and swapping out my breakfast for nutritious smoothies. Weekend strolls along the breathtaking coastline became a cherished habit, not merely for exercise but for the joy of being outdoors. Although I strive to rekindle that healthier version of myself now that I’m back in the UK, I must confess that biscuits have seduced me in my return home.
Capsule Wardrobe
This winter in the UK has forced me into an unexpected shopping spree for coats—one for each kind of chilly day. My wardrobe has expanded significantly since returning, largely driven by the unpredictability of the English weather, unlike the simpler, more streamlined capsule wardrobe I curated in Sydney, which mainly consisted of versatile skirts and lightweight jackets.
Swimming Bliss
I genuinely miss the joys of swimming, particularly the serene outdoor pools. Although I intended to continue swimming during pregnancy, the thought of stepping into my local leisure center in the UK fills me with dread. In contrast, my time in Sydney offered the luxury of an outdoor pool—albeit unheated—but the experience of drying off under the sun afterward truly encapsulated bliss.
Indulgent Hotcakes
Despite my healthy lifestyle, I couldn’t resist the lure of indulgent hotcakes for breakfast in Australia. From ricotta hotcakes at Bills to passionfruit-topped versions at Harry’s Bondi, these sweet delights were a highlight of my culinary adventures. Each café visit turned into a delicious quest for the best stack of pancakes.
Exceptional Coffee Culture
Melbourne is renowned for its café culture, where bad coffee is nearly non-existent. My mornings often began with a perfect latte, a daily ritual that has left an indelible mark on my coffee standards.
Reality TV Show Love
While Australian television can lean towards the uninspired, I found joy in the renovation show “The Block,” which captivated me with its drama and creativity. Watching novice teams transform dilapidated properties into stunning homes became a cherished pastime, alongside other entertaining shows that injected fun into my evenings.
Outdoor Dining Experiences
Currently, as the UK enjoys a brief spell of favorable weather, outdoor dining areas seem to be in high demand. However, what I truly miss about Australia is the prevalence of al fresco dining spaces that accompany almost every café or restaurant, even when there’s a risk of rain.
Endless Beautiful Beaches
With over 25,000 km of coastline and an abundance of pristine beaches, Australia invites you to explore its serene shores. The spontaneous beach trips I took during my time there are adventures I will forever treasure.
Fashion Finds
During my four years in Australia, I frequently lamented the absence of the British high street. I adored shopping at iconic Australian brands like Witchery and Country Road, which offered a quality and style I often sought after. With a planned shopping spree on my upcoming visit, I cannot wait to revisit these favorites, especially for baby essentials that have become essential in our lives.
Road Trip Adventures
The beauty of an Australian road trip is unmatched. There’s a unique thrill in traversing those endless roads, stopping at tiny towns and marveling at the rugged landscapes along the way. Although we explored many regions of Australia, I often dream of hitting the open road again, perhaps with a campervan adventure for our family in the future.
Less Crowded Space
Upon returning to the UK, the sheer density of the population here has proved to be a significant adjustment. The busyness of life, from crowded streets to bustling public spaces, often leaves one yearning for the quieter, more spacious feel of Australian life.
Reflecting on my time in Australia has solidified the joy and experiences that enriched my life there. As I prepare for my upcoming trip to Melbourne, I feel an excitement fluttering within me, eager to revisit old haunts, reconnect with cherished memories, and see what new adventures await.
