Next Year’s Price Surge: Why Your Japan Trip Will Cost You More Than Ever

Japan stands as an extraordinary travel destination, teeming with rich culture, delectable cuisine, and an intriguing historical backdrop. Its bustling capital, Tokyo, is set to be named one of the trendiest neighborhoods in the world for 2025. If you’re considering a trip to Japan in 2026, there are several important updates and financial considerations to keep in mind.

Starting next year, the Japanese government plans to implement various changes regarding tourist visas and associated fees. Notably, the exit tax will be raised, along with the costs of single and multi-entry visas. As reported by the reputable Japanese financial outlet, the Nikkei, funds generated from these increases are intended for enhancing airport infrastructure and security, as well as supporting national initiatives like making high school education accessible at no cost.

This adjustment marks the first increase in the exit tax since its initiation six years ago, and the first increment in visa fees since 1978. Although official announcements regarding the exact implementation timeline of these changes are pending, travelers should be aware of them as they plan their journey.

Japan’s Departure Tax on the Rise

Since 2019, all travelers departing Japan have been required to pay a modest fee, including its citizens. This amount is typically incorporated into the cost of plane or ferry tickets, alleviating the need to complete any additional paperwork. Currently set at Â¥1,000 (approximately €5.60 or £4.90), this fee is scheduled for a considerable increase to align with “international standards.”

Comparatively, many nations impose higher exit taxes; for example, Germany’s fee can range from €15.53 to €70.83, and Mexico charges about $68 (€58). While the precise new rate for Japan remains undetermined, an increase of up to tenfold would be necessary to compete with these countries.

    Increase in Visa Fees

For those who require a visa to enter Japan—essentially non-residents from most EU, US, and UK territories—current fees stand at ¥3,000 (€17) for a single entry and ¥6,000 (€34) for multiple entries. Anticipated increases in these fees are on the horizon, although the specific amounts are yet to be disclosed.

To provide some context, short-term visas in other countries often impose heavier financial burdens. For instance, the UK’s short stay visa costs £127 (€145.60), while all Schengen zone countries charge a uniform fee of €90. Therefore, it’s reasonable to expect Japan’s updated visa rates to fall within a similar price range.

Why Are These Changes Happening Now?

The timing of these adjustments stems from the fact that it has been decades since the last fee increases. Moreover, Japan has been grappling with issues of overtourism, and officials believe that these changes could help manage visitor numbers while generating funds necessary for improving infrastructure strained by the growing influx of tourists.

In conclusion, if you’re contemplating a trip to Japan in 2026, staying informed about upcoming changes to visa fees and exit taxes will be crucial for budgeting your travels. Understanding these adjustments can lead to a more seamless travel experience and allow you to fully immerse yourself in the rich experiences Japan has to offer.
