A growing awareness in the travel industry is leading to the discontinuation of unethical practices involving elephants.

Many travel companies are now prioritizing the welfare of elephants by halting experiences that involve rides, bathing, or feeding. Carnival Corporation, a major player in the cruise industry, has decided to eliminate direct encounters with elephants from their excursions, primarily impacting tours in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Emily Guice, a spokesperson for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), emphasizes that the move by Carnival Corporation sets a precedent for other travel brands, encouraging a broader shift away from exploitative tourism.

Carnival Corporation operates under several well-known brands, including Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises. According to their representatives, they are committed to partnering solely with tour operators that uphold high standards for elephant welfare.

    The Shift in Travel Practices

The trend began with Intrepid Travel, which became the first global tour operator to exclude elephant rides from its itineraries back in 2014. Since then, over 100 travel companies—including reputable names like Airbnb, Costco Travel, and Expedia—have followed suit. This collective action not only reduces cruelty towards elephants but also aligns with a growing consumer demand for ethical travel experiences.

Valerie Taylor, executive director of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, notes the crucial role that tourists can play in phasing out elephant exploitation. By choosing not to participate in such activities, travelers can help undermine the market for captive elephants and their harsh training methods, which often involve abusive practices.

Understanding the Reality Behind Elephant Activities

While many tourists view activities like bathing and hand-feeding elephants as harmless, these experiences can be detrimental to the animals. Taylor warns that such engagements can jeopardize an elephant’s health, exposing them to diseases and unhealthy dietary habits. For instance, feeding elephants sugary fruits can lead to obesity and other metabolic issues.

    Ethical vs. Unethical Sanctuaries

Choosing the right sanctuary is essential for those who wish to observe elephants ethically. Unfortunately, many attractions falsely use labels like “sanctuary” or “rescue center” to attract visitors while continuing harmful practices. Legitimate sanctuaries strictly prohibit direct human interaction with elephants, focusing instead on their rehabilitation and welfare. Tourists are encouraged to engage with these facilities in a way that does not exploit the animals.

    Finding Ethical Alternatives

For ethical elephant encounters, consider visiting well-reviewed sanctuaries and conservation centers. Recommendations include Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary in Thailand, as well as Elephant Valley Project in Cambodia and David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. These organizations prioritize animal welfare and provide visitors with a genuine, ethical experience.

When planning your travels, it’s important to reflect on how your experiences impact wildlife conservation. The choices you make while touring can significantly influence the future of these majestic creatures. By supporting ethical practices, travelers can contribute to the well-being of elephants and promote a more humane travel industry.
