Unforgettable Adventures Await: Discover Antigua and Barbuda

This is a bold statement, but I think Antigua might be my favorite Caribbean island. My recent visit marked the third time I’ve explored this gem, and I fell even deeper in love with its gorgeous beaches, rich culture, and tantalizing BBQ ribs. Those ribs are simply unforgettable.

If you’re gearing up for a trip to Antigua and Barbuda, here’s my list of essential experiences, including some exciting new spots you’ll want to check out.

    The Hut Little Jumby

A new highlight in Antigua is The Hut Little Jumby, a stylish private island restaurant and beach club operated by the same talented team behind the renowned Hut on the Isle of Wight, England.

I was fortunate to be among the first to enjoy their exceptional hospitality, and trust me, everything—from the food to the ambiance—was spot on.

This beachfront restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily, featuring a creative menu that fuses traditional flavors with modern twists. The fish tacos and bang bang conch were standout dishes for me.

Relax at the laidback bar and garden area with drinks in hand. Be sure to check their website for live DJ events over the weekends if you’re seeking a lively atmosphere.

If you’re celebrating a special occasion, consider renting one of their incredibly chic beach cabanas. You can relish a day of sunbathing with cozy sofas, a private bar, and showers set against the pristine sands of Little Jumby.

To get there, take The Hut’s complimentary catamaran from Barnacle Point on the mainland. If you’re lucky enough to be staying at Jumby Bay Island, a shuttle boat will also take you there.

    Shirley Heights

Located on a hill overlooking English Harbour, Shirley Heights offers more than just a stunning view; it’s an experience that’s a can’t-miss when visiting Antigua, particularly on Sundays during their famous sunset parties.

Picturing breathtaking sunsets paired with the rhythms of steel drums, smoky BBQ, and refreshing rum punch paints a vivid picture of the electric vibe here on Sundays.

The Shirley Heights Sunday Party runs from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM and tends to get crowded during peak season, thanks to its legendary status across the Caribbean. An entrance fee of EC$25 / US$10 applies, so make sure to bring some cash, especially if you plan on indulging in the BBQ delights. Those ribs are an absolute must!

    Kai Coconut

We’ve talked about fantastic dining experiences, but here’s another gem: Kai Coconut. This floating bar boasts fun waterslides and mouthwatering BBQ fare, perfect for a laid-back day enjoying the shimmering turquoise waters.

Moored at Valley Church Beach on Antigua’s west coast, known for its stunning aquamarine waters, the two-story catamaran is accessible via tender from Small Ffryes/Coco Bay. They offer various packages, including VIP options and sunset parties, all set in a buzzing atmosphere. And yes, the BBQ ribs are phenomenal!

    Humble & Free Tour

For something entirely different, I highly recommend joining Humble & Free’s eco-tours, which provide a genuine insight into Antigua’s Rastafari community. I participated in the Jabba Pot cooking experience with the charismatic Rasta Rich and enjoyed engaging conversation alongside delicious food.

Humble & Free features multiple options, from farm tours to hikes, allowing guests to explore areas of the island that typical tourists don’t usually see.

    Nelson’s Dockyard

A visit to Antigua wouldn’t be complete without exploring Nelson’s Dockyard, the last remaining working Georgian dockyard globally, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016.

Whether you choose a guided tour or decide to leisurely stroll around the beautifully preserved 18th-century naval dockyard and marina, you’ll gain fascinating insights into the island’s maritime heritage.

Relax on One of Antigua’s 365 Stunning Beaches

With 365 beaches at your disposal, several of them consistently top the favorites list:

Ffyres Beach – My personal top choice, this secluded beach on the island’s southwestern corner is perfect for long romantic walks away from the crowds.

Jolly Beach – A vibrant stretch that offers numerous water sports, bars, and restaurants, with calm waters ideal for snorkeling.

Dickenson Bay Beach – This mile-long stretch of golden sand features a mix of luxurious resorts like Royalton CHIC Antigua and rustic beach clubs like Siboney Beach Club. It’s conveniently only a 10-minute drive from St. John’s, making it perfect for cruise ship day-trippers.

Carlisle Bay Beach – This picturesque beach features a golden crescent flanked by palm trees and lush hills, providing a stunning backdrop.

    Day Trip to Barbuda

If time allows, take a boat or plane to Antigua’s twin sister, Barbuda, and explore Pink Sand Beach & Frigate Bird Sanctuary for a unique bird-watching experience.

    Where to Stay in Antigua

Consider Tamarind Hills for your stay, a luxury villa resort located in the hills above Ffyres Beach. It’s an ideal base on one of Antigua’s most stunning beaches.

As part of a collection of small luxury hotels, Tamarind Hills Resort & Villas offers a beautiful Antiguan home away from home, featuring stylish private residences and studios, all equipped with kitchens and spacious private pool terraces.

I enjoyed an Ocean View Studio with a Jacuzzi, complete with rustic chic decor and panoramic beach views from the suite and balcony.

For a luxurious escape, stay in one of the few overwater villas at Royalton CHIC Antigua, an adults-only all-inclusive resort on beautiful Dickenson Bay Beach. (Check the slideshow above for more details!)

For families, St James’s Club Antigua stands out as an all-inclusive resort that provides 2 beaches, 6 pools, 5 restaurants, tennis courts, water sports, a kids club, and a spa.
