    Given notoriously sky-high prices for food and drink at airports, inflation, and the “I’m on vacation” factor, that plan can put a dent in your travel budget before you even get on the plane.

    Frequent travelers make the solution sound easy: “Buy a day pass, use your elite airline status, or flash a branded credit card and hang in a lounge where all the food and drinks are free.” That works if passes are available, you’re flying in the correct cabin, and if your credit card perks line up with the lounge access rules. However, that strategy is becoming an ever-bigger challenge given crowded airport lounges, tighter access rules, and ever-rising annual fees on credit cards that unlock lounge access.

    Here are 10 other ways to lower the bill for food, drinks, and snacks at the airport.

    Pack to Snack

    The classic advice is to eat before leaving home and pack healthy snacks, plus an empty water bottle to refill post-security. It makes so much sense—you’re less likely to mindlessly spend on overpriced food or drink in the terminal if you’ve got your own stash. And what you don’t eat at the airport or on the plane might keep you from raiding the hotel minibar later.

    Sally French, a travel expert at NerdWallet, tweaks this strategy by tucking small protein-rich packets of peanut or almond butter in with her TSA-approved bag of liquids. She also brings cups of instant soup, oatmeal, or macaroni and cheese along, and asks for hot water at coffee shops or fast-food counters.
