    Tokyo: 8 Must-Do Airbnb Adventures

Tokyo is a city that feels like it has no limits when it comes to discovery. Even after numerous visits—ten for me!—you can still stumble upon new food stalls, hidden shrines, late-night bars, quirky subcultures, and neighborhoods that feel distinctly unique.

One of the most immersive ways to experience Tokyo is through Airbnb Experiences. These tours, led by locals and long-term residents, offer insights into Tokyo’s rich food culture, vibrant nightlife, history, and crafts in ways that traditional tourism often misses. Over the years, I’ve participated in several Airbnb Experiences in Tokyo, and I find them to be extremely engaging, often surpassing traditional tours like those available on Get Your Guide. However, I must mention that Arigato Travel is an exceptional choice for traditional tours, so make sure you don’t overlook them.

To help you navigate the sea of options, here are my top picks for Airbnb Experiences in Tokyo that blend cultural immersion, hands-on activities, and a splash of fun:

Master Sushi Making with a Pro Chef

While sushi-making classes are abundant in Tokyo, this Airbnb Experience stands out as it’s hosted in an omakase restaurant. The class is led by a skilled sushi master or their apprentice. Here, you don’t just learn the mechanics of shaping rice or slicing fish; you grasp the significance of different cuts, the nuances of seasoning rice, and how to pair each ingredient to elevate texture and flavor. It’s a hands-on experience set in a small group in the morning—perfect for a delicious and fun breakfast before you venture out to explore the city. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

    Shibuya Nightlife with Unlimited Drinks

This nightlife tour stands out as my favorite in Tokyo. The host, Suemi, along with her friends, creates an inviting atmosphere. This Shibuya nightlife experience takes you to 3-4 izakaya spots that are tucked away from the average tourist path, filled with locals instead. With unlimited food and drinks, the night is bound to be unforgettable. My guide, Shugo, was lively, communicative, and adept at managing group dynamics. He shared detailed insights on izakaya culture and even stuck around beyond the end of the Experience. He made it enjoyable.

Suemi and her team also host an unlimited Sake tasting class, which stands out as the best Sake experience I’ve had in Tokyo. They provide in-depth knowledge about the Sake-making process with plenty of visuals, making it accessible to everyone. With a small group of six participants, this experience is personal and engaging. If you’re keen on Sake, definitely choose this one. (They also offer a whiskey tasting experience that I haven’t tried yet, but I have no doubt it’s top-notch as well.)

    Explore Shinjuku Izakaya Culture

This experience mirrors the Shibuya nightlife tour but is set in Shinjuku, another major nightlife hub in Tokyo. Shinjuku is home to countless tiny izakayas, many hidden away in narrow alleyways or tucked into upstairs spaces. This tour, guided by Yuma, a knowledgeable Sake sommelier, explores these local spots, demystifying izakaya culture.

You’ll sample various styles of Sake as Yuma guides you through reading menus, selecting dishes, and explaining how locals typically enjoy food and drinks in these settings. He’s sociable and clear in his explanations, ensuring the experience is relaxed and enjoyable. It’s an excellent way to dive into Shinjuku’s nightlife without feeling out of place.

A Historical Walking Tour of Tokyo

This tour is one of the most enlightening experiences I’ve encountered in Tokyo. Rather than typical tourist hotspots, it takes you through quieter neighborhoods, rich in historical context. The guide is a lecturer with expertise in Japanese history and traditional culture, providing you with a wealth of information throughout the walk.

You’ll visit sites such as Nezu Shrine—with its iconic red torii gate tunnel—and wander through the historic streets of Yanaka. You’ll delve into the Edo period, the Meiji Restoration, and the evolution of the samurai as Japan modernized. This 2.5-hour walk is paced perfectly, offering a clearer understanding of Tokyo’s journey to becoming the city we know today.

    Discover Tokyo’s Coffee Culture

Tokyo boasts a burgeoning coffee scene, and this tour expertly showcases it. You’ll navigate the lesser-known neighborhoods of Jimbocho and Kanda, delving into both traditional kissaten cafes and modern specialty shops. Learn about brewing methods, flavor nuances, and the craftsmanship that characterizes Japanese coffee culture.

The experience includes visits to historic cafes, innovative third-wave coffee shops, and even wagashi (traditional sweets) shops, where you’ll discover the delightful pairings between coffee and traditional Japanese treats. It’s a thoughtfully curated afternoon that stands out.

    Organic Matcha Tea Ceremony

This one-hour session is a wonderful introduction to matcha and its significance within Japanese tea culture. You’ll gather insights into matcha’s history, its societal role, and how to differentiate top-quality varieties. The host guides you through the traditional matcha preparation step-by-step. You’ll whisk and savor authentic matcha in a serene setting that offers an oasis away from Tokyo’s bustling streets. Though brief, it’s a memorable experience that deepens your appreciation for what you’ll frequently encounter during your travels in Japan.

    Ramen Exploration Tour

Ramen is synonymous with Japanese cuisine, and this tour helps uncover its rich tapestry. Over approximately three hours, you’ll visit multiple ramen shops, each highlighting a distinct style or preparation method. You’ll learn about the dish’s origins, current trends, and regional variations while sampling a wide range of bowls—from classic to avant-garde. The guide breaks down the types of broth, noodle textures, and toppings in an easy-to-grasp manner. Go hungry; this tour promises to satisfy!

Street Art Tour of Shibuya and Harajuku

This tour guides you through the streets of Shibuya and Harajuku, showcasing murals and installations hidden within alleyways and less conspicuous areas. The street art scene in Tokyo is quieter, often regarded as underground, making this exploration culturally captivating. You’ll learn about the locales where street art is permitted and how it flourishes in such a restrictive environment. Moreover, the tour includes visual aids showing murals before and after creation, providing fascinating context. This unique experience allows you to glimpse a side of Japan that many overlook.

    ***

With a plethora of Airbnb Experiences in Tokyo, I’m sure I’ve barely scratched the surface. Still, these eight suggestions provide a solid foundation for your adventures. Make an effort to book at least one of these experiences while you’re in Tokyo; they offer a refreshing break from conventional tours!
