After my third visit to Montenegro this summer, it has solidified its place as one of my top destinations in Europe. From the majestic fjord-like views in Kotor to the charming waterfront dining in Perast, there’s always something new to love with every trip.
For those in search of a relaxing holiday paired with rich cultural experiences, stunning scenery, and endless fresh seafood, Montenegro is the ideal choice.
How to get to Montenegro
Our Lady of the Rocks, Perast
Flying into Montenegro is simple, especially with Jet2 offering convenient flights to Tivat.
Direct flights from London Stansted take just under three hours to reach Tivat Airport, and the drive to Kotor takes merely 20 minutes, traffic permitting.
Best things to do in Montenegro
Montenegro is the small Balkan gem that appeals to diverse interests. Whether you crave adventurous hikes, upscale beach clubs, or fine dining experiences, it has it all.
Spend a morning climbing an ancient fortress and wrap up your day on a speedboat gliding through the sun-kissed Bay of Kotor on your way to dinner.
Here’s a curated list of my favorite activities around Kotor, along with tips for an affordable yet luxurious getaway with Jet2holidays.
Explore Kotor Old Town
Nestled in a corner of the fjord-like Boka Bay is the fortified Old Town of Kotor. The medieval red roofs and cream-colored buildings contrast beautifully with the surrounding mountains and water. Hike up the Kotor city walls to St. John Fortress for breathtaking views.
The 2.5 km hike is approachable, with plenty of spots to pause and admire the scenery along the way. (Click here for more info on the hike.)
Don’t miss the charming cats that roam freely throughout the streets, especially at Pjaca Od Drva, also known as Cat Square!
As a cocktail lover, my go-to spot in Kotor is the rooftop terrace of Boutique Hotel Hippocampus, perfect for enjoying chic drinks away from the crowds.
Tip: Kotor attracts many cruise ships, which can create crowds. Check cruise schedules on platforms like Cruise Mapper to find quieter times for your visit.
Ride the Kotor Cable Car & Alpine Coaster
Launched in August 2023, the Kotor Cable Car swiftly transports you to the summit of Lovcen, the ‘Montenegrin Olympus’, in just 11 minutes.
Goodbye winding roads; hello stunning views. Enjoy glimpses of Kotor Old Town on your ascent before reaching the clouds, revealing the splendor of Boka Bay, Tivat, the Adriatic Coast, and the surrounding mountains.
The cable car’s Upper Station serves as a gateway to hiking trails, stunning photo spots, cycling routes, and a kids’ play area.
Recharge at the trendy Forza Kuk terrace restaurant or sip an Aperol Spritz at Monte 1350 Bar. For thrill-seekers, the Alpine Coaster invites you to enjoy a self-driven ride that showcases amazing scenery. At just €8 per ride, you can take it slow at certain points for photo opportunities!
Each carriage accommodates two, allowing kiddos aged 3-8 to ride with an adult.

Take a boat trip to Perast
Perast is my favorite destination in Montenegro. This enchanting fishing village on Boka Bay, with its traditional Baroque buildings and captivating church spires by the water, feels like stepping into a fairytale.
Sail here by boat to explore the two island churches steeped in folklore, nestled just offshore. The waterfront also hosts exquisite dining options offering traditional Montenegrin seafood, right by the azure waters.
Spend a day in Herceg Novi
Herceg Novi offers charm galore with its well-preserved Old Town, especially vibrant on market days filled with locals. This lesser-known coastal gem boasts impressive fortresses, including Kanli Kula, which overlooks the Adriatic Sea.
Be ready for some steps; Herceg Novi is known as the town of stairs, with supposedly 100,000 steps weaving its streets!
Don’t miss the historic clock tower in Old Town, once the main gate and now a true symbol of Herceg Novi, as well as the terrace of Gradska Kafana for a coffee break that won’t break the bank.
For a unique experience, hop on a private boat tour of the vibrant emerald waters. I enjoyed an amazing trip with skipper Vladimir, exploring the famous Blue Cave and tranquil bays ideal for snorkeling.

Visit Budva Old Town
Located on the Adriatic Sea, Budva is renowned for its beautiful maze-like Old Town extending into the water. During my first Montenegro visit, I loved meandering the charming streets, stopping at Casper Bar & Coffee Roastery for coffee and people-watching.
A standout dining experience was at Vista Vidikovac, a chic Mediterranean restaurant offering breathtaking views of Budva.
Go on a jeep safari to Gornji Stoliv
For an adventure off the beaten path, embark on a jeep tour with Go Baloo to the ancient mountain village of Gornji Stoliv.
Perched high above Boka Bay, this village provides stunning views of Perast and an intriguing glimpse into a life once lived without paved roads.
Explore the remaining stone buildings, with a stop at the No Name Café, known for tasty snacks paired with picturesque views.
Where to eat in Montenegro – 4 must-try restaurants
Hotel Conte, Perast
A visit to Montenegro isn’t complete without a dinner at Hotel Conte, accessed by taxi boat. The scenery, delicious seafood, and exceptional service create an unforgettable dining experience.
For an indulgent treat, indulge in their traditional tasting menu (€95 per person). Enjoy seven courses, including fresh oysters, prawn-stuffed gnocchi, and traditional beef steak. Save room for dessert; their almond parfait is a must-try!
Scala Santa, Kotor
Known as Kotor’s oldest restaurant, Konoba Scala Santa is a cozy taverna located in the heart of the Old Town, often frequented by cats.
The menu features a delightful mix of Italian and Montenegrin dishes; I highly recommend the bruschetta and spaghetti with shrimp.
For dessert, swing by Moritz Eis, considered the best ice cream shop in Montenegro, and indulge in the salted caramel flavor.
Konoba Skver, Herceg Novi
On the waterfront in Herceg Novi, Konoba Skver is a beloved spot for both locals and visitors.
This family-run restaurant serves the catch of the day caught by the friendly owner, ensuring freshness in every dish.
Catovica Mlini, Morinj
For something special, reserve a table at Catovica Mlini, perhaps the most beautiful restaurant in Montenegro.
Located a short drive from Perast, this elegant eatery in a former mill is surrounded by lush gardens and serene waterways, creating the perfect romantic ambiance.
With a menu of elevated Montenegrin dishes, the mixed seafood starter and sea bass adorned with white truffle sauce stand out as extraordinary meals.
Families are welcome, with ample space for children to play. Reservations are recommended and can be made through their website.
Stay at Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay
This stunning bayfront hotel is the ideal choice for a luxury getaway in Montenegro, situated between Kotor and Tivat.
The views from Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay of Boka Bay are simply breathtaking.
This resort features multiple shared pools (and select rooms with private pools), a stylish beach club, a waterfront spa, and a remarkable restaurant offering elevated dining options with views.
I enjoyed a deluxe pool view room that was spacious, elegant, and cozy, with an incredibly soft bed. Staff routinely replenished water, tea, and coffee, enhancing the experience.
The breakfast buffet was a delightful array of eggs made to order, local delicacies, and freshly made pastries.
The hotel has its own pier, making traveling to Perast by speedboat easy. (During summer, the narrow roads can get congested.)
With shops and restaurants within walking distance, the hotel is set in a lovely area ideal for morning strolls along the Bay.
Ultimately, this hotel serves as the perfect base for a luxurious beach holiday in Montenegro, offering a unique taste of life along Kotor Bay.
