While applying at an embassy may be more cost-effective and allows for complete independence in travel, it does necessitate visiting a consulate, and there’s always a risk of rejection.
My own experience with the Consulate in Barcelona in 2018 resulted in an unexpected visa denial despite submitting all required documentation. With Algeria gradually opening up to tourism, your chances may be more favorable today.

Note that processing times can differ significantly, with some taking up to a month, particularly in the USA.
Visa on Arrival for Algeria
As of 2024, a visa on arrival is available, although it comes with a hefty price tag and requires a Letter of Invitation (LOI) from an accredited tour operator.
Obtaining a Letter of Invitation
Only registered local tour companies can issue an LOI for visa on arrival. Generally, those based in Algiers require you to book a full tour, which can be costly. Conversely, operators in Southern Algeria may provide an LOI for just booking a desert tour, allowing for more flexibility in travel.
Visa Purchase at the Airport
At the airport, you’ll buy your visa, which varies in price based on your length of stay. As of January 2026, the fees are set as follows:
- 2 days: €35
- 3 to 7 days: €70
- 8 to 10 days: €135
- 11 to 15 days: €170
- 16 to 30 days: €340
