A visit to Iceland is often prompted by a desire to explore otherworldly landscapes, observe unique geological features, and witness luminous atmospheric events. While all are worthwhile pursuits, this focus tends to overlook the vibrant arts scene happening in ReykjavÃk.
Icelandic artists find considerable inspiration in the natural world, and their tight-knit artistic community embodies a spirit of collaboration—a mindset that’s rooted in collective survival within this harsh, far-north climate. Art is a reflection of nature and society, and in a country where artistic endeavors are highly valued, a venture into the art scene is more of a complement than a distraction.
For anyone curious to understand Iceland beyond the aurora and look inside the hearts and minds of the people who spend their lives here, an excellent place to start is the ReykjavÃk Arts Festival, which took place this year from May 30th to June 14th. The festival highlighted the current creative output of not only Icelandic artists but also of established international creators as well, and focused on themes of stimulating the senses, reflecting on long-held perspectives, and providing a platform for voices that are silenced elsewhere.
Although the 2026 festival is over, a few exhibitions are running until September, such as German conceptual artist Karin Sander’s exhibition Karin Sander 1957-2057, James Merry’s retrospective Metamorphlings, and Björk’s Echolalia.
